What Should I Do With Two Days In Gateshead?

If you have two days to spend in Gateshead, there are many things to see and do. Here are some suggestions:

Day 1:

  • Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art: This former flour mill turned art gallery is home to some of the best contemporary art in the North of England. Allow at least 2-3 hours to explore the exhibitions.
  • Gateshead Millennium Bridge: This iconic pedestrian and cyclist bridge links Gateshead to Newcastle and is particularly impressive when lit up at night. You can walk or cycle across it in about 15 minutes.
  • The Sage Gateshead: This Norman Foster-designed music venue hosts concerts ranging from classical to world music and everything in between. Check their website for upcoming events and ticket prices.

Day 2:

  • Angel of the North: This imposing sculpture by Antony Gormley is one of Gateshead's most famous landmarks. It's best viewed from a distance, so consider taking a bus or taxi to see it from afar.
  • Beamish Museum: This open-air museum is a short drive outside of Gateshead, but well worth the trip. You can explore what life was like in the North East during different eras of history, including a Victorian town, Edwardian pit village, and a 1940s farm. Plan to spend at least 3-4 hours at the museum.
  • St. Mary's Heritage Centre: This former church in Gateshead's Quayside area now houses exhibitions about the area's history and heritage. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Allow about an hour to explore the centre.

When it comes to places to stay, there are many options in and around Gateshead to suit different budgets. If you're looking for luxury, the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead has stunning views across the River Tyne. For something more affordable, the Premier Inn Gateshead Quays is conveniently located near many of the top attractions. There are also many bed and breakfasts and guesthouses in the area, such as the Kenilworth Guest House in Gateshead town centre.
