What Should I Do With Two Days In Birkenhead?

If you have 2 days to spend in Birkenhead, here are some suggestions for things to do:

  • Visit the Williamson Art Gallery & Museum. This beautiful building houses a collection of art and artefacts, including paintings by local artist Birkenhead-born artist Arthur Dooley and a display on the history of Wirral. Allow around 2-3 hours for your visit.
  • Take a walk in Birkenhead Park. This historic park was designed by famous landscape architect Joseph Paxton and is a lovely place to spend a few hours. You can stroll around the lakes, admire the statues and monuments, and take a break in the café. Allow around 2 hours for your visit.
  • Explore the Mersey Ferries. Birkenhead is right on the River Mersey, and you can take a ferry from the pier to Liverpool. The trip takes around 20 minutes each way and gives you great views of the river and both cities. Allow around 3 hours for your visit.
  • Visit Birkenhead Priory. This 12th-century monastery is one of the oldest buildings on Wirral and has an interesting history, including connections to William Shakespeare and pirates! Allow around 1-2 hours for your visit.
  • Take a tour of Cammell Laird shipyard. This famous shipyard has built vessels for over 180 years, including the Queen Mary and HMS Prince of Wales. Tours last around 2 hours.

For places to stay in Birkenhead, there are several hotels and guesthouses in the town centre. The Mercure Wirral Hotel is a popular choice, as is the Premier Inn Birkenhead Town Centre. There are also several B&Bs in the area, such as the Peel Hey Guest House.
