So you've got 24 hours in South Shields! That's a great amount of time to visit - let's see what our expert guides would recommend. Last updated 15th December 2023.

What Should I Do With 24 Hours In South Shields?

South Shields is a lovely coastal town with plenty to offer. Here are some suggestions for things to do during your 24 hours in town:

  • Visit the beach and seafront: South Shields has a beautiful stretch of sandy beach and an impressive seafront. Take a stroll along the promenade, watch the boats in the harbour, and maybe even dip your toes in the water if it's a warm day. Allow at least 1-2 hours for this.
  • Explore Arbeia Roman Fort: This historic site gives you a taste of what life was like for Roman soldiers stationed in the area. There are reconstructed buildings to explore, as well as artefacts and exhibits. Plan to spend around 1-2 hours here.
  • Wander through South Marine Park: This lovely park has a lake, ornamental gardens, and plenty of green space to relax in. There's also a play area for kids and a miniature steam railway. You could easily spend 1-2 hours here.
  • See the Marsden Rock Seabird Colony: This natural landmark is home to thousands of nesting seabirds, including puffins, kittiwakes, and fulmars. You can watch them from a safe distance on the clifftops. This should take around 30 minutes to an hour depending on how long you want to stay.
  • Check out the Customs House: This arts venue hosts a variety of events, including theatre shows, comedy nights, and music gigs. See what's on during your visit and maybe catch a show. Allow around 2-3 hours if you're planning to attend an event.

Of course, there are plenty of other things to do in South Shields depending on your interests. Don't forget to try some local food and drink while you're here, too!
